The purpose of the FRESH project is to provide nutritional meals to the underserved members of our community. We bring homegrown foods to several drop-in shelters, meal programs and resource centers in Dane County, WI. We have a focus on fresh fruits and vegetables. When we began in the summer of 2010 we grew beans, peas, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, cucumbers and lettuce to provide fresh salads for people who are homeless. Now we also provide healthy and creative seasonal meals.Oftentimes, food donated to pantries and shelters is day old bakery goods, which are high in fat and carbohydrates. In addition, people trying to survive on a limited budget do not have access to healthy food. The least expensive food in our society is often the least nutritious. Furthermore, a point often overlooked is that food available at pantrys cannot be utilized by people who are homeless because of lack of access to kitchens, utensils and refrigeration. Our goal is to overcome these barriers by providing a healthy and fresh alternative.

Holiday Party, 2011

At our holiday party, December 3rd, we received many donations from our friends and family for the FRESH Project. We had around 80 guests and the food and company was fabulous. Our donations included: - $455 - Spoons- Forks - Cups- Plates - Fish- Sauce - Servingware- Soup - Jam - Pasta- Rice- Beans- Containers- Pie PlatesThank you so much to all of our generous donors. :o)

What We Did This Week

This week we brought a simple but nostalgic dish: pasta with pesto. What We Did Last Week

Last week, my grandmother made us cinammon apple salads to bring to the shelter. They were unusually sweet for a salad without a lot of sugar so we thought they were a perfect choice to get people excited about healthy food.

Donate Time, Donate Supplies, Donate Food

Time Commitment: 2 hours

1. Drive to South Madison Farmer's Market

2. Pick up fresh food

3. Take to HEALTH hut and prepare individual servings

a. Go to kitchen (downstairs and to the right)

b. Prepare individual servings of fruit or vegetable salads (depending on what food you have)

c. Place in appropriate container (containers are in box by the wall)

d. Place in paper bags

4. Deliver to Bethel Lutheran Church

1. Plastic forks, knives and spoons

2. Ziplock bags

3. Disposable plates

4. Recyled containers (able to hold salad or soup)

5. Napkins

6. Personal hygiene items

a. toothbrushes

b. toothpaste

c. hand sanitizer

d. kleenex (pocket)

e. soap/shampoo/conditioner

Food

If you are a gardener, baker or cook and would like to contribute your own food rather than picking it up at a market that would be greatly appreicated. If you have your own prepared food follow the delivery instructions from above.. You can deliver the food to the HEALTH hut where we can bring it to the church or you can directly deliver it to Bethel Lutheran Church

Wednesday's location:

The Southwest Community Farmers Market is from 3 - 7 p.m. and will continue every Wednesday through Oct. 1 in the Orchard Ridge UCC Church parking lot, 1501 Gilbert Road.

Thursday's location:

June 2rd -- October 27th

The Villager Mall is hosting Thursday's market on their grounds from 2 - 6 pm. Map to the Villager
